Making A USB Hard Drive Bootable

June 25th, 2011

Vista and Windows 7 DVDs include a utility to make a USB hard drive bootable so you can install from them.

The command for this is:
E:\boot\bootsect.exe /nt60 F:
where E is the DVD drive, and F is the hard drive that you want bootable.

Once you’ve done this, you can copy the contents of the DVD to the USB hard drive, and install from that. Great for when you didn’t buy a SATA DVD drive for your new computer :D

Wrapup: Help Pay My Bills: A HN Experiment

October 8th, 2010

A week ago, I put together a page (http://bendauphinee.com/paythebills), and posted it as an experiment on HN (http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1745856). I went to bed with the hope that it might net me one or two small jobs, and stave off the immediate need for cash. When I woke up way too early the next morning, I immediately jumped into the thread I posted like a kid at Christmas, hoping that I would have gotten some small offer of work. I was so pleased to have gotten a dozen or so comments and went about responding to those and the few email I received, then went back to bed.

Checking back a few hours later, I was astounded by the response from the community I got. I was well on the way to 2k visitors on that page, and 20 or so comments. This was only the start however, as, between the emails and comments, I had received an offer for a job interview. Cut to the end of the day, with things finally starting to calm down, I had received almost a dozen offers of work, some small, a few a little larger, and that one job interview. My final stats in the 5k range for visitors, and over 20k page views from them.

I would like to say a sincere thank you to the HN community. You have been (for the most part) supportive and helpful through your comments. You have given me some much needed work, and in some cases the potential for long term relationships. You have helped show the potential for an idea to work, and made me feel awesome about taking a shot with it. The future is still a little dim, but thanks to all of you, I have gotten a few great ideas for how to increase my potential work.

Thanks HN, for being awesome.
